East Meets West
What began as a simple remodel of a stucco barn and kitchen loft evolved into a stunning full-sized home—an inspired blend of rustic western architecture and treasured Asian artistry. The homeowners’ goal was to create a space where their vast Asian art collection could harmonize with the rugged beauty of timber-frame design.
Western and Eastern influences are balanced through texture, tone, and form. Western paintings, carved wood and metal sculptures from local artists are carefully mixed in with large Buddha statues, antique furniture, and collected dishware. Blending the two worlds results in a cohesive design that celebrates cultural harmony and natural beauty.
Mountain Craftsmanship
The home’s structure celebrates mountain craftsmanship, warmth, and authenticity by blending:
- Exposed massive structural timbers and iron rod supports, which define the ceilings
- Reclaimed barn wood doors and cabinetry accented with hand-forged iron hardware
- Wide plank hand-hewn walnut floors
- Handcrafted blacksmith light fixtures and sconces
- A staggered timber staircase with custom railing creates an alcove for the large Buddha
Kitchen
The kitchen uniquely balances the theme of East meets West with:
- Large, efficient appliances with a custom metal hood
- Rustic harvest table used as the prep island
- Light gray, clean-lined cabinetry and minimalist hardware bring a simple Asian juxtaposition of materials
- An Asian-inspired mustard cabinet used for dish storage
- Reclaimed cabinets and a handcrafted metal countertop ground the space
Lower Level
The lower level was converted to a vibrant family game room and entertainment hub featuring:
- Reclaimed sliding horse stall doors, giving a nod to the original structure, open to the guest bedrooms and bath suites corridor
- Custom built-ins for the TV and art pieces
Upstairs Loft
The upstairs loft, once a kitchenette, now houses a master suite with a spa-like bath, workout area, and reading loft overlooking the great room below.
